FAQs

  • Q: How do I volunteer with LOUD Fence?

LOUD Fence Inc rely on our wonderful volunteers in all locations to assist us with events and other occasions. If you are interested in being a volunteer, that we call Hands, please complete the Volunteer form here.

  • Q: Do you need permission to start a LOUD Fence?

Anyone is welcome to start a LOUD Fence. We strongly suggest you contact the place you wish to place ribbons and explain why it is important for you to tie ribbons at that location. This conversation may help the ribbons to remain on the fence.

We would appreciate you sending us photos of your LOUD Fence for us to share.

  • Q: Do survivors and victims ever meet up socially?

We do promote catch ups and events where survivors, victims and their supporters can get together on our social pages. We keep these occasions as safe as we can with a positive vibe. If you are new to these occasions, you are welcome to let us know you will be attending so we can reach out to you and assist you to feel comfortable.

  • Q: I am keen to donate money to support your cause, how do I do that?

LOUD Fence Inc is a registered charity. You can donate via Bank Transfer here.

  • Q: Ribbons have been tied to our fence, who can we speak to about this?

LOUD Fence Inc would love to speak with you in regards to this, but please understand we don’t always know who tied the ribbons, or the reason or story behind that occurring. We can try and assist you, via our social media, if you wish to reach out to the person/people who tied them and mediate on their behalf if needed.

  • Q: Our organisation has recently discovered a history of child sexual abuse, what do we do now?

LOUD Fence Inc appreciates it can be quite a shock for organisations who find themselves in this situation, and we are happy to consult with you about where to go from here.

You can contact us here to discuss further.

  • Q: Our family has been greatly affected by child sexual abuse, what support does LOUD Fence offer?

Sadly, so many families are caught in the ripple effect of child sexual assault. It is always a good idea to gain professional help. We have created a list of services available for you to access.

Please note, while we have done our best to collate the most helpful services, some services may not be available in your location.

  • Q: Do the different coloured ribbons mean different things?

The ribbons are colourful, ‘LOUD’ because there has been too much silence.

We have never dedicated ribbon colours to mean special things but we have tied or worn specific colours as a sign of remembrance or at a location in memory of a specific victim.

  • Q: Why doesn’t LOUD Fence post news articles on their social pages?

LOUD Fence Inc has listened to survivors over the years. We made a decision early on to promote survivors’ voices, and not post articles about perpetrators and their crimes.

This can be a difficult rule to navigate and we don’t always get it right.

  • Q: I (or someone I know) am a victim of sexual abuse, who do I reach out to?

Firstly, we are here for you and hope you find the strength to speak out. Whether this is something new or historical, we suggest you contact the police. We also suggest you reach out for help using some of the services available here.

  • Q: Does LOUD Fence only represent clerical sexual abuse?

LOUD Fence Inc’s beginnings were a result of the truths spoken at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, so originally we were supportive of victims of clerical abuse.

By listening to survivors, we realised quickly that we needed to broaden that range and since then, LOUD fence Inc has supported ALL survivors and victims of child sexual assault.

  • Q: How do I explain the ribbons to a young child?

The ribbons look beautiful, possibly even magical, so naturally children will be drawn to them. It can be difficult for parents and guardians to talk to their children about child sexual assault.

For young children we suggest you explain to them that the ribbons are to remind big people to listen to little people. There are now many wonderful, age appropriate resources available that talk about child safety.

  • Q: Do ribbons only get tied to Churches?

Ribbons are tied at lots of different locations, not just Churches. LOUD Fence Inc does not always know the story behind the tying of ribbons but we greatly respect anyone’s reasons for doing it. Many schools, and other institutions, have acknowledged their past and encourage people to tie ribbons at their location.

  • Q: Why do the ribbons keep getting cut down?

Ribbons are tied as a visual display of support for survivors and victims of child sexual assault. Sadly, we don’t really know why people cut down ribbons but we suspect some people may feel it is disrespecting their church or other location, they are triggered by the ribbons or they feel shame.

  • Q: Besides tying ribbons, what else does LOUD Fence do?

LOUD fence Inc supports survivors and victims in many ways. We believe connection is incredibly important so we do organise workshops and guest speakers, and participate in a variety of events.

  • Q: Do the ribbons trigger victims and survivors?

We have heard that the ribbons do trigger some survivors. Sadly, some see them as a reminder of their abuse and some don’t like to see the ribbons once they are tatty and weathered. LOUD Fence Inc are always open to having a discussion with people who feel triggered.

  • Q: Am I allowed to tie my own ribbons on an existing fence?

You certainly can. LOUD Fence Inc truly hopes this is empowering and restorative experience for you. You are also welcome to send us a photo of your ribbon for us to share.

  • Q: Do you have group events for ribbon tying?

Occasionally we do organise group ribbon tying events, both local and at locations around the world. Keep any eye on our social pages for such times.

  • Q: Why isn’t there a National Ribbon Tying Day or a National Survivor of Sexual Abuse Day?

This is a great question and one that is debated regularly. We believe some people may need to tie ribbons at a time that suits them.

LOUD Fence Inc will be advocating for a National Day and hope that all institutions, organisations and workplaces will get on board.
